Brandberg
20°57'S 14°36'E

Standing in a semi-desert climate, the Brandberg massif is a granitic intrusion dating from the Cretaceous period, some 130 million years ago. Different varieties of stink-bush, wild figs and acacia predominate in the valleys. They are also home to now rare species of insects and lizards, whereas far more abundant fauna are depicted in ancient rock paintings of which 50,000 have been found in the area to date. The red areas along the Ugab river are a result of satellite imaging, and indicate flourishing vegetation on land close by the watercourse.
