Namibia's orange sand dunes lie within the Namib-Naukluft National Park. The sand contains iron oxide, which imparts its remarkable colour.
The Sossusvlei, a name that roughly means 'dead end marsh', is dry except in years with plentiful rainfall. Then, water descending from the nearby Naukluft Mountains flows down it before evaporating in the desert.
