Santa Cruz Department extends from the eastern edge of the Andes to the lowland plain of the Amazon Basin. The Piraí River shown here feeds into the Río Guapay, which in turn is a tributary of the Amazon. Ranching and agriculture are the economic mainsprings of this warm and humid region. The cultivated tracts of land are planted mainly with soy, farmed by colonies of Mennonites who established themselves in the region some 35 years ago. The distinctive pattern of subdivisions aligns with the routes of agricultural tracks that the farmers use to access their fields. The red areas are a result of false-colour satellite imaging: the stronger the shade, the healthier the vegetation.
