Grand Prism. Spring
44°32'N 110°50'W

Yellowstone National Park in the US state of Wyoming is the site of North America's largest thermal spring. Water at its mid-point has a temperature of about 70° Celsius, meaning that no micro-organisms can exist there. The deep blue central area is due to ultra-clear water 49 metres deep, whereas the colours encircling the perimeter are produced by single-celled micro-organisms. Their shading ranges between orange and red in summer, then shifts more to the dark green end of the spectrum in winter. Grand Prismatic Spring gushes water at a rate of some 2000 litres per minute.
