Great Salt Desert
34°31'N 54°00'E

Dasht-e Kavir, also known as the Great Salt Desert, lies in the middle of the Iranian plateau in a high altitude basin, ringed by two mountain ranges that shield the area from rainfall. At 800 kilometres long by 320 kilometres wide, it is the second-largest desert in Iran after Dascht-e Lut. Dasht-e Kavir is uninhabited on account of the very high concentration of salt in the ground, and summer surface temperatures of 50°C.
